CHINESE CAR MAKER PLAYS AMERICAN IDOL WITH LOGO
American Idol, is now officially a worldwide phenomenon. Even in communist China, the Western Culture is infiltrating all aspects of their culture and business. Chinese carmaker GEELY, has even gone so far as to use the popular American Idol judging format to select their new logo. A group of adjudicators, after a 4 phase selection process, will narrow down 100 finalists to the single winning entry. The ‘lucky’ winner, according to this article, will earn $58,000.
I have a few problems with this. First: Unless you have Simon, you WILL fail…even if you get some other English guy, or gal that loves hurling insults, there is only one Simon. Second: It annoys me that so many large companies are switching to ‘contest’ formats for graphic design work. This article perfectly articulates this problem, although on GEELY’S behalf, $58,000 for a logo is a respectable sum. Third: A logo should not be GEELY’S primary concern, getting a new name should be. Mercedes…Lexus…Bugatti…Geely??? One of these names is not like the other ones. The others conjure up thoughts of luxury and quality, Geely evokes thoughts of a children’s board game.
